What Is an Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety is a normal human response to stress — but when worry, fear, or physical tension become persistent, overwhelming, and difficult to control, it may signal an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health conditions in the United States, affecting tens of millions of adults each year.

There are several distinct types of anxiety disorders, each with its own pattern of symptoms and triggers. An accurate diagnosis is essential because the most effective treatment varies by subtype. With the right psychiatric care, most people with anxiety disorders experience significant and lasting relief.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Characterized by persistent, excessive worry about a wide range of everyday topics — work, health, finances, relationships — that is difficult to control and present more days than not for at least six months. Often accompanied by restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and muscle tension.

Social Anxiety Disorder

An intense fear of social or performance situations where one might be scrutinized, embarrassed, or judged negatively. Goes far beyond shyness — it can interfere with work, school, relationships, and daily activities. Physical symptoms like blushing, sweating, and trembling are common.

Panic Disorder

Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks — sudden surges of intense fear with physical symptoms such as racing heart, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, and a sense of impending doom. People often develop persistent worry about future attacks and may avoid situations associated with them.

Specific Phobias

Marked, persistent fear of a specific object or situation (heights, flying, needles, animals, etc.) that is out of proportion to the actual danger. Exposure to the feared stimulus triggers immediate anxiety, and people often go to great lengths to avoid it.

Agoraphobia

Fear and avoidance of situations where escape might be difficult or help unavailable during a panic attack — such as crowds, public transportation, open spaces, or being outside the home alone. Can become severely limiting if untreated.

Separation Anxiety Disorder

Excessive fear or anxiety about separation from attachment figures, beyond what is developmentally expected. In adults, this often manifests as intense worry about loved ones' safety and difficulty being away from home or close relationships.

Signs & Symptoms to Watch For

Anxiety disorders affect both the mind and the body. Recognizing the full range of symptoms — psychological and physical — is the first step toward getting the right help.

Psychological Symptoms
  • Persistent, uncontrollable worry or fear
  • Sense of dread or impending doom
  • Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank
  • Irritability or feeling on edge
  • Avoidance of feared situations or triggers
  • Intrusive thoughts that are hard to dismiss
  • Fear of losing control or going crazy
Physical Symptoms
  • Racing or pounding heartbeat (palpitations)
  • Shortness of breath or feeling smothered
  • Muscle tension, aches, or trembling
  • Sweating, hot flashes, or chills
  • Stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint
  • Sleep disturbances — trouble falling or staying asleep

How We Diagnose & Evaluate

Anxiety disorders are often misdiagnosed or undertreated. Our evaluation process is thorough and unhurried — designed to identify the specific subtype and any co-occurring conditions so your treatment plan is precisely targeted.

Comprehensive Psychiatric Interview

We conduct an in-depth conversation covering your anxiety history, symptom patterns, triggers, family background, and how anxiety is affecting your daily life. We listen carefully before drawing any conclusions.

Subtype Identification

Different anxiety disorders require different treatments. We carefully distinguish between GAD, Social Anxiety, Panic Disorder, Phobias, and other presentations to ensure your diagnosis is accurate and specific.

Rule Out Medical and Co-occurring Conditions

Thyroid disorders, cardiac conditions, and other medical issues can mimic anxiety. We also screen for depression, PTSD, OCD, and substance use, which frequently co-occur with anxiety disorders.

Personalized Treatment Planning

Once we have a clear picture, we build a treatment plan tailored to your specific subtype, severity, lifestyle, and preferences — combining medication, therapy recommendations, and lifestyle strategies as appropriate.

Medication Management

Medication can be highly effective for anxiety disorders, often working best in combination with therapy. Our psychiatrist carefully selects medications based on your specific diagnosis, symptom profile, and medical history.

SSRIs & SNRIs (First-Line)

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are the most commonly prescribed medications for anxiety disorders. They are non-habit-forming, effective for most subtypes, and typically taken daily.

Buspirone

A non-benzodiazepine anti-anxiety medication particularly useful for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. It is non-sedating, non-habit-forming, and works well for chronic anxiety without the risks associated with benzodiazepines.

Beta-Blockers for Situational Anxiety

For performance anxiety or specific situational triggers, beta-blockers can reduce physical symptoms like racing heart and trembling. They are used on an as-needed basis rather than daily.

Careful, Monitored Use of Benzodiazepines

When appropriate, short-term benzodiazepines may be used for acute anxiety relief. We prescribe these cautiously, with close monitoring, and always with a clear plan for long-term management.

Therapy & Lifestyle Recommendations

Medication works best alongside evidence-based therapy and healthy lifestyle habits. We coordinate with therapists and provide guidance on approaches proven to reduce anxiety.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

The gold standard for most anxiety disorders. CBT helps you identify and challenge distorted thought patterns, gradually face feared situations, and build lasting coping skills. We can refer you to a CBT-trained therapist.

Exposure Therapy

A specialized form of CBT particularly effective for phobias, panic disorder, and social anxiety. Gradual, structured exposure to feared stimuli reduces avoidance and breaks the anxiety cycle over time.

Mindfulness & Relaxation Techniques

Mindfulness-based stress reduction, diaphragmatic breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation are evidence-supported tools that reduce the physiological arousal underlying anxiety.

Lifestyle Foundations

Regular aerobic exercise, consistent sleep, reduced caffeine and alcohol, and social connection all have meaningful effects on anxiety. We help you build sustainable habits that support your treatment.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Taking the first step is often the hardest part. Here is exactly what your first visit looks like — so you can walk in feeling prepared, not anxious about the appointment itself.
